They provide temporary housing, treatment and recovery, education, job training and placement for those in need.  A Safe Haven has been lauded by leaders in academia, business and in government for its outstanding measurable success in its creation and application of a workable model to help those in need become fully self-sufficient.

About Rotary International

Rotary International is a 1.2 million-member organization that began with the vision of one man – Paul P. Harris. The Chicago attorney formed one of the world’s first service organizations, the Rotary Club of Chicago, on February 23, 1905 as a place where professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. Rotary’s name came from the group’s early practice of rotating meetings among the offices of each member.

“Neli Vazquez Rowland, President of A Safe Haven Foundation (ASHF) was appointed as a co-chair to the Healthcare and Human Services Committee as part of Governor-elect Rauner’s transition efforts. Brian Rowland, co-founder and CEO of A Safe Haven will serve on the Transition Policy Committee for Veterans.[i]

Serving on Governor Elect Bruce Rauner’s transition committees, the Rowlands have a unique opportunity to offer input and share the knowledge they gained while growing the A Safe Haven Foundation with its private sector business model to help Chicago area homeless get back on their feet.

The Rauner Transition Committees consist of a broad range of community, business, faith and political leaders whose expertise is expected to help make Illinois the most compassionate and competitive state in the U.S. For more information about the Governor Elect, you may visit MakeIllinoisGreat.com. “I am committed to assembling a diverse and talented team to drive results for our state and bring back Illinois.” – Bruce Rauner

Homelessness and poverty are serious symptoms of a challenged economy and failure on many levels of society. Public funding cuts caused many homeless shelters on government contracts to close their doors. Men and women with children who lost jobs have few places to turn. Homeless veterans also face compelling challenges. A Safe Haven has enjoyed success because they use an innovated Social Business Enterprise model that engages other businesses and everyone wins.

“I am so honored to be selected to serve on this committee and am ready to roll-up my sleeves and get work done, Neli Vazquez Rowland commented. “The issues of healthcare and human services are dire! According to the Social Impact Research Center, over 30% of our neighbors in Illinois are low income or live in poverty. These individuals need help with medical bills, purchasing prescriptions and buying groceries. They are often one paycheck away from becoming homeless.
